When this happens, the water instantly evaporates, creating steam inside the oven and heating the brick enclosure, thereby raising the air temperature in the room. This method provides a much dryer heat than common steam rooms, but not as dry as traditional Finnish saunas. The bathers sit or lay on three-level tiered cedar benches, which allow for dramatically different temperatures at the various heights. Cold water is provided by taps located under the benches. When overwhelmed by the heat, a bather may dump a bucket of frigid water over his head while still in the hot room, or may step outside to use the cold pool.

From the moment your server places a basket of hot hushpuppies and cinnamon rolls from the on-site bakery on your table, your mouth is in for a treat at the Chesapeake House. Try the famous fish stew or lobster pie as a warm-up to the main course, which includes fried seafood platters and fresh catch specials, including shrimp, scallops, lobster and grouper. The steamed crab legs are a hit, and the Chesapeake House has a nice selection of steaks and other “landfood” options to keep everyone in your party happy.

"In California, we like to promote ourselves as climate champions [and] as climate leaders. But it's strange that 40 million people in our state don't have those rights," he said. Midwestern USDA Choice beef grilled and served with mushroom gravy with crisp onion rings. Served griddle seared or fried in the House tradition and topped with cinnamon and brown sugared apples.

New residents should be aware of the region's climate, characterized by hot and humid summers and mild winters. It's also important to note that the area is prone to hurricanes and tropical storms, so being prepared for severe weather is essential. While the cost of living can be higher in some parts of the metro area, particularly near the waterfront, there are a variety of housing options available to suit different budgets. Traffic and congestion can be challenges, especially around military bases and during tourist season, so planning commutes accordingly is wise. Whether you're a seafood enthusiast or a culinary adventurer, there's something special for everyone at the Chesapeake House.

Chesapeake House Atmosphere

As one of the first establishments on Restaurant Row, the Chesapeake House combines Maryland-style seafood with true Southern hospitality to create a place that keeps crowds coming back for more year after year. First and foremost though, The Chesapeake House is a family affair and over the years the Cribbs have raised five children and numerous grandchildren at the "Peake". Some have gone on to carry on the tradition at Lee's Inlet Kitchen and Chestnut Hill Restaurant located next door.

Climate risks

Jean grew up on the family farm in the Chestnut Hill area. Jean's seafood heritage goes back to another famous Murrells Inlet seafood restaurant, Lee's Inlet Kitchen. Here, Jean and Ed learned how to cook and serve seafood in the "Low Country” tradition made famous along the Carolina Coast. That tradition continues today at The Chesapeake House.

Our three homemade house dressings are Ranch, Bleu Cheese and Thousand Island. We also offer Honey Mustard, Parmesan Peppercorn, Balsamic Vinaigrette and Low-Fat Italian. Add grilled salmon for $12.95, cold-boiled shrimp for $10.95, fried oysters for $13.95, seared tuna for 12.95, or grilled chicken breast for $9.95. The Broiled Seafood Platter is another crowd favorite, featuring an assortment of fresh seafood like scallops, shrimp, and oysters. These are broiled to perfection and served with a side of vegetables and potatoes. Ed grew up in Georgetown, SC and learned the restaurant business working his way up the ladder at the legendary Oliver's Lodge, Murrells Inlet's oldest and most famous restaurant.

Community events and festivals throughout the year celebrate everything from the area's maritime heritage to the arts. This Chesapeake House specialty has diners raving about the perfect blend of seasoning and succulent crab meat. Add the house-made tartar sauce, and you’re in for a flavorful taste treat. Using only local flavors and fresh ingredients, chefs have created a culinary tradition that resonates with locals and vacationers. Since 1971 this Cribb family-owned eatery has been serving some of the freshest seafood on the Strand.

Fried chicken, cut up for you tossed with marinara, pasta and topped with melted Monterrey Jack cheese. Grilled salmon with a baked pesto and breadcrumb topping. Most homes have some risk of natural disasters, and may be impacted by climate change due to rising temperatures and sea levels. Bringing the culinary traditions and welcoming hospitality of Maryland's Eastern Shore.

Lobster, lump crab meat and Monterey Jack cheese, layered with a rich and creamy wine sauce and finished with Japanese breadcrumbs. Shrimp, tomatoes, bacon, sautéed onions and peppers mixed with a combination of zesty spices. Boneless breast served with sautéed onions and special seasonings. The Chesapeake House welcomes diners like an old friend, while the familiar smell of fresh seafood fills the air. Topping this off is catching a sunset from the restaurant's stunning waterfront view.

Today, Ed's son Buddy is also carrying on that tradition with his children. Grilled chicken breast topped with spinach, bacon, onion and melted Monterey Jack cheese. Mixed greens, chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, Monterey Jack cheese, toasted almonds and croutons. Fresh spinach, red onion, grape tomatoes, bacon bits, grated egg, crumbled bleu cheese and sliced almonds served with balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Rings and tentacles lightly fried and served with marinara. Our family recipe that hasn’t changed in over 40 years.

In the hustle and bustle of trendy eateries, fast food joints, and fusion cuisine, the Chesapeake House stands as a testament to timeless tradition and culinary excellence. It's not just a restaurant; it's a piece of Myrtle Beach history, a family legacy, and a culinary tradition that has been passed down through generations. Three Dog Night was bringing "Joy to the World", Nixon was president and Archie Bunker and Flip Wilson were the kings of television. Jean and Ed Cribb decided to take a leap of faith and build a seafood restaurant out on Highway 17 North.

Hart House University of Toronto Wikipedia

toronto hart house

Beginning in 2010, students in the Faculty of Music Consort have used them in rehearsals which are often open to the public. The collection of six viols is on permanent display in a glass case in the Gallery Grill restaurant on the second floor of Hart House. Each one was made by a different luthier, with the earliest one from c. Distinguished architect Henry Sproatt designed Hart House in the Collegiate Gothic style using the finest of materials.

University College Collection

It is also a late collegiate Gothic building because of its late erection date, 1919. The building consists of four wings around a quadrangle with a four-peaked tower extended from the south west corner. Although Hart House appears to be of masonry construction, it is actually structural steel and precast concrete with grey sandstone cladding. New York’s Brooke Hobson scored her first career goal — with assists from Micah Zandee-Hart and Jade Downie-Landry on a power play with 48 seconds remaining — to cap the scoring. Natalie Spooner followed with her league-leading 16th goal of the season — six more than the next closest player.

History

A name which just so happens to be identical to that of a 111-year-old student centre at the University of Toronto. Since 1976, the Hart House Orchestra has provided an opportunity for musical fellowship among members of the University of Toronto community with training and interest in performing symphonic works. The Hart House Art Collection is incredibly impressive, including works like A.Y. Jackson’s Georgian Bay, November, embracing mid-century movements pivotal to Canadian art.

Hart House Chess Club

The viols became the sole property of Hart House in 1935 (see Instrument collections). Their use was restricted to experienced 'string musicians for rendering music appropriate to them'. They were used by the Toronto Renaissance Quintet, led by Wolfgang Grunsky, and by the Hart House Consort, led by Peggie Sampson. The viols, still owned by Hart House in 1990, were not in playing condition.

On the south side of the building there is a line of miniature human head sculptures made out of stone near the top of the building. There are also stone lions and monkeys that are on the outside of the main doors one at each side. The arch braces on the flat roofs of the east hall ways have carved decorations on them.

Hart House Review

Past concert tour destinations have included Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston, Windsor, London, Guelph and Sudbury. On a few special occasions, the orchestra has toured to Carnegie Hall, New York City; Tübingen, Düsseldorf and Göttingen, Germany; Chicago, Illinois; and Ann Arbor, Michigan. Organizational operations are run by a committee of nominated volunteer orchestra members. The majority of elements within Hart House hint at the Perpendicular style of Gothic architecture and thus generally line up in a row. Arches and vaults are the dominant structural form, however, there are parts of the building that employ lintels to create open spaces with flat ceilings (such as the East Common Room).

Hart House Theatre is often referred to as the cradle of Canadian Theatre. Opening in November 1919, the Art Deco theatre on the University of Toronto's St. George campus quickly became a leader in the Canadian "Little Theatre" movement of the 1920s and 1930s. Hart House Theatre cultivated and featured some of the country's finest actors, directors, playwrights and designers of the Pre-World War II era, including Raymond Massey, Dora Mavor Moore, Lloyd Bochner, Lawren Harris, Arthur Lismer, Wayne and Shuster and Merrill Denison. After the war, Hart House Theatre, under the direction of Robert Gill, became an extracurricular student theatre and for twenty years turned out a new generation of stage professionals. William Hutt, Don Harron, Kate Reid, David Gardner, Arthur Hiller, Donald Sutherland, Norman Jewison and Lorne Michaels all got their start on the Hart House stage. This committee oversees many of the literary events that Hart House sponsors throughout the school year.

Special events

While there was an early reluctance to include jazz in the music programs at Hart House, by the late 1950s regular jazz concerts had been initiated, and among the noted artists who subsequently appeared were Moe Koffman and Oscar Peterson. Sproatt’s showpiece, The Great Hall, occupies the east wing of the House. A gilded inscription of Milton’s Areopagitica, written in 1644 in defense of freedom of speech and thought, surrounds the 140-foot hall. The coats of arms of the Royal Family and degree-granting universities of the British Empire from 1919 sit below an enormous stained glass window on the south wall.

We ask everyone to respect others' decisions, comfort levels & health needs. Since 1976, the HHO has provided an opportunity for members of the University of Toronto community with musical interest and training, to fellowship and perform challenging symphonic works. New York, which has been eliminated from postseason play, closes out the regular season at home against Ottawa on Tuesday and Minnesota on Saturday. After World War II, Hart House Theatre, under the direction of Robert Gill, became an extracurricular student theatre and for twenty years turned out a new generation of stage professionals.

“The bricks and mortar are but the bones; the community must provide the spirit,” said Massey. There are two accessible entrances and exits at Hart House, one located at Tower Road and one on Hart House Circle, the southeast double doors at the Founder's Prayer. In addition to the two accessible entrances/exits, the south doors east of the Arbor Room entrance on Hart House Circle are also available for use. As an undergraduate, Vincent Massey read history and English at University College in the University of Toronto, and then completed graduate studies in history at Balliol College, Oxford. Upon his return to Canada, he sought to bring a unifying, communitarian spirit to the highly independent colleges of the University of Toronto, inspired by the social and recreational life that he observed at Oxford's colleges. Massey, who in 1908 had become a trustee of his family estate, offered to establish a structure devoted to extracurricular activities at the university, an idea that was embraced by the university's governors.

With approximately 717 works, the collection spans various forms, reflecting the sheer breadth of Canadian art. Beyond its cultural significance, the collection serves as an educational resource to visitors. Of course, people use this iconic spot to study and that’s why students can get a 20% discount on Candlelight concerts. There are 50 discounted tickets in zone C so grab it while you can using the code HARTHOUSE20. The Conservatory String Quartet gave performances on the Hart House Viols, a chest of six viols purchased ca 1930 by the Massey Foundation and the Arts and Letters Club.

It meant that every piece of writing had to be approved by authorities before it could be printed, completely stifling freedom of speech. Eclectic and wide-ranging, many works are installed throughout offices and public spaces across campus to enhance the working and teaching environment of the University of Toronto. We wish to acknowledge this land on which the University of Toronto operates. For thousands of years it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.

The tournament will be hosted at the historic, neo-gothic building, Hart House, at the University of Toronto. Hart House is regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful student centers and is a visual icon of the University of Toronto. The grand interior of Hart House is designed with high arched ceilings that vary from room to room. On an annual basis the Orchestra runs two concerto competitions, one internal (open to HHO membership) and one external (open to the community).

His contributions and involvement at the University of Toronto are extensive, and his history with the House goes back over 25 years. He has been an active participant of the Hart House Board of Stewards for several years, and has had a strong connection to the House from his time as a U of T student to the present day. The first royal visitor to Hart House was Prince Edward, Prince of Wales, who played squash with students there in 1924. In 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth toured the campus and lunched at Hart House.[25] Elizabeth II made the first of several visits as a princess in 1951. On an annual basis the orchestra runs two concerto competitions, one internal (open to its membership) and one external (open to the community). The winning soloists perform with the orchestra, usually in the following season.

Born in Toronto and raised in Mississauga, Hopkins, a fourth-year student at the Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCADU) has mixed roots, hailing from the Batchewana First Nations near Sault Ste. Marie, and the Métis community of St. Paul in Manitoba on his mother’s side. He is also English on his father’s side, having ancestors who immigrated to Canada in the 1940s. By the mid-1960s the theatre joined the world of academia with the creation of the Graduate Centre for Study of Drama. A new generation of students combined dramatic literature with practical theatre experience and learned from and contributed to the vibrant Toronto theatre scene of the 1970s.

Rohinton Mistry, Camilla Gibb, Lynn Crosbie and similarly notable names in Canadian literature have been published in the HHR. The review also hosts lecture and reading events that feature established and emerging figures in Canadian literature and publishing. In addition to its regular exhibitions, the gallery houses an art collection that is valued at over CDN $10 million. Hart House is an example of Gothic Revival architecture as it is asymmetrical with pointed arches and windows, extensive ornamentation, steeply pitched roofs and a tall tower.

Pattern in Art: Types and Examples

pattern principle of design

Patterns can be produced with lines as well, which can generate an optical illusion. Repeating patterns can come in all different shapes, sizes, and directions. An irregular pattern is created when the pattern deviates from its expected “perfect” condition.

Irregular Patterns by Piet Mondrian

pattern principle of design

Using the Alt key, duplicate the black square and then change its color to white. You can lower the brightness of the background to distinguish between the black and white squares of your project more clearly by using Command+U with the option "Lightness". Go back and duplicate the black and white squares, thus creating your first row of rapport. If you select all the layers with Command+T, you'll be able to reduce their size and fit them into your 30x30cm plan. Asymmetrical balance is achieved when the elements on either side of a central axis aren’t the same. For example, you might have a large image on one side balanced out by prominent text on the other.

Importance of pattern in art

Using repetition to keep the eye familiar with our design’s elements means we’re taking advantage of this tendency. We can also use shapes, colors, textures, fonts, etc. to maintain this consistency via repetition. The main principles of graphic design are balance, contrast, emphasis, repetition and pattern, proportion, movement, white space, unity, and variety. Movement can be created with rhythm when using a variation of an element repeatedly. Using curved lines and diagonal lines creates more movement compared to straight lines. Color can help enhance the feeling of movement, juxtaposing high and low key colors to create energy.

How to Add Music to a Video in 4 Steps: Renderforest Guide 101

Variety is the use of several elements of design to make your art “explorable” and give the viewer a better experience. Variety in design adds something interesting to the composition to create contrast and tension. For instance, mixing organic shapes with geometric shapes adds variety. This concept should reinforce the message you are trying to communicate in your design—otherwise, it can look pointless. You can achieve unity by making clear relationships between visual elements.

The use of repeated visual elements is a technique designers commonly employ in web design. You can repeat design elements, for example, to provide a consistent visual experience. It will make it easier for users to focus on the content because they know where they can find specific types of content or navigation options. His classic abstract paintings often used irregular shapes and colors in simplified ways. Mondrian’s use of asymmetrical balance and irregular patterns were fundamental in the development of modern art.

Visual Hierarchy: Organizing content to follow natural eye movement patterns

A complete lack of contrast would result in a design that’s simply a single background color with no other visible elements — not exactly a functional design. A design where you can see different elements automatically has some level of contrast. Easy, fast, effective, and based on the basic design principles presented above.

How Are Patterns Formed in Art?

However, although they may seem like they should need no introduction, we should study them. By understanding these concepts, you’ll be able to apply them more effectively to captivate your users’ attention while making your designs more effective. In it, two zebras are defined only by the alternating black and white lines that form the stripes. The Color Field Painting art movement of the 1940s-1950s was part of Abstract Expressionism, and it displays how patterns can be formed with just color. Patterns ranging from monochromatic to multicolor can be formed by using color.

Using Inductive Reasoning in User Experience Research

pattern principle of design

While we’ve all seen our fair share of experimental pieces out there, it's important to know the significance of the fundamentals. Every design piece has a structure below the surface that holds up the design and makes it visually interesting and balanced. Once designers understand the usage of the principles, they’ll understand better how to break these rules.

Mucha used this to create the effect of a hazy starlit sky, with each star being slightly different in size. He also used borders and images of leaves and flowers within his lithographs to enhance the visual effect. Pattern can be seen in the jewels on the headdress, the flowing lines of the woman’s hair and the knot designs in the border.

Because of the way the shapes are arranged and vary in size, the pattern is still harmonious and balanced. Patterns are important in art because they help to add rhythm and movement, catch the viewer’s attention, or create emphasis in the artwork. Unity gives a design and sense of harmony, both visually and conceptually.

Patterns are made by arranging shapes, lines, and forms in such a way that the art elements repeat. Unlike repetition and pattern above, rhythm has slightly more complexity to it. As a result, individual design elements may not repeat or be the same at all points; rather, their repetition is adaptive and changes throughout the design. The use of repeated design elements is a controversial topic in the creative industry.

You can find unity wherever you find clear organization and order, and the elements of the page won’t be fighting for attention. Too much unity can result in a sterile design with a lack of personality. That’s when you can start incorporating other elements to add movement. Starting his career as a pre-Raphaelite artist, William Morris then turned his hand to design, architecture, printmaking and much more. His most famous works were the decorative wallpapers he created in the 19th century. With intricate floral and foliate designs that are still popular today.

Pattern is defined as a repeated set of shapes, forms, lines or colours that create a harmonious visual effect. The combination of these visual elements creates a motif, design element or image. This is then repeated across a surface to create unity and harmony in a design. Artists use pattern as a design principle to create a sense of order, balance and structure in a composition. Patterns are often used for decorative purposes, but they can also be used to convey emotion or subtle messages. This approach allows for a clarity of information and structure, and can allow the web designer a scaffold around which to build a clarity of information.

Hart House is a centre for experiential education outside the classroom at the University of Toronto. A new generation of students combined dramatic literature with practical theatre experience, and learned from and contributed to the vibrant Toronto theatre scene of the 1970s.

He was moved by the beautiful colours on ribbon skirts and regalia as the people danced in front of the Toronto skyline. Initially, Brownrigg says, Hopkins was going to co-create this with mentor and widely received artist Nyle Miigizi Johnston, who painted a mural on the exterior of Hart House in April of 2020. But Johnston wasn’t available, so Hopkins, seen as an up-and-comer at the time, did it on his own.

It got its start before the First World War when Vincent Massey, a University College alumnus who would become U of T's chancellor and governor general, convinced his family to fund a building that would serve as a place for recreation and co-curricular activities. The Hart in Hart House comes from Massey's grandfather, Hart Massey. Hart House is located south of Hoskin Avenue, between Queen’s Park Crescent and Tower Road. Smoking has not been permitted on University premises since January 2019. All U of T community members who wish to smoke must do so on city property (e.g., St. George Street, Queen’s Park Crescent.). In 1983, the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery opened at Hart House, and has since presented innovative exhibitions by up-and-coming Canadian artists, as well as historic Canadian and internationally renowned traveling exhibitions.

Classical Theatre Slam

Today Hart House Theatre is the focal point for the performing arts at the University of Toronto. With over a thousand students participating each year in its extra-curricular season of drama, dance, music and film, Hart House Theatre continues to influence each new generation. The performances are often well reviewed by art critics, and almost always sell out. The Hart House Theatre has become an important hub at the University of Toronto both for students and the community, presenting drama, dance, music and film. Portraits of past Hart House wardens, as well as chancellors and governors of the University hanging in the hall are identified at the entrance way.

A big shoutout to Valary at Hart House for her help with the wedding day logistics & planning. A bigger thank you to the beautiful newly-wed for choosing me to capture your big day, wish you the happiest-ever-after. With the venerable Gothic Revival-style landmark now sharing the name of a quick-service food establishment, future wedding invitations might require a little bit of clarification. That's right, the five-foot and change comedic giant Kevin Hart is once again making Toronto famous, and this time he didn't even have to mispronounce the name of the city to raise its profile. Hopkins started drawing and painting when he was 10, selling his first piece of art by 13.

Shields at the north end of the hall represent 74 universities of nations allied with Britain and Canada in 1919. Hart House was one of the earliest, and still is one of the most beautiful, student centres in the world. An historic site, Hart House has been referred to as “the finest example of Beaux Arts Gothic Revival in Canada.” Standing northwest of Queen’s Park, this distinguished building is the visual icon of the University of Toronto. No matter where you are, Virtual Hart House has events, activities, classes, podcasts, videos and more for you to access anytime. Hart House is pleased to continue to offer students the essential services they need to enhance their university experience. Contained within, you will find a snapshot of all that the students of U of T (alongside community members, staff, faculty and alumni) have learned and accomplished together over this year at Hart House.

Please be sure to bring along your photo ID when coming to access a piano. Those failing to abide by the guidelines may be asked by staff to vacate the room and return the keys before their booked session is completed. The Hart House Fitness Centre is always here for you, and is happy to serve your fitness and wellness needs. For up-to-date protocols on visiting U of T campuses, please see the Covid planning update on U of T website. The east windows are heavily leaded with a medley of pastel glass interspersed with clear glass painted with motifs. The upper gallery windows feature hand-painted caricatures of the scholars and eccentrics from the time of Hart House’s origins. We are pleased to continue to welcome students back to Hart House to fill the halls with their music. Drop in to play a piano in one of four locations within the building. Student players of all levels of training and ability are encouraged to lose themselves and revel in the act of making music. Even though the detail of the Gothic style is much simpler than the Romanesque style, it still has decorative stone and wood carvings inside and outside the building.

The Great Hall at Hart House bears a gilded inscription from John Milton’s Areopagitica that is simply breathtaking. It represents Milton’s advocacy for open discourse and the pursuit of truth, written way back in 1644. It was written in response to the Licensing Order of 1643 which was a huge deal in England at the time.

Life As A House movie review & film summary 2001

life as a house

Los Angeles profoundly shaped the modernist movement, but the City of Angels holds far more than its historic legacy. From Pierre Koenig’s iconic Stahl house to the Eames House and the transformation of the Los Angeles Basin, the city has continuously sought a new aesthetic, one where progressive forms and spatial multiplicity coexist. Reacting against old styles and outdated approaches, architects have constantly reimagined the city’s built environment through experimentation and reinterpretation. Thank goodness there are actors capable of delivering performances better than the scripts they're given. A manipulative tearjerker, Life as a House benefits from fine performances from the cast.

Movies and TV Shows with Arab Leads

Robin goes to the house and tells Sam about his father's death. Sam gives the property to a woman who has been living in a trailer park. As a girl, she was injured in a car crash caused by his grandfather. The move signals that discussions regarding increasing military pay and support services will be at the center of the committee’s upcoming work on the must-pass authorization legislation. Some of the plot lines never get resolved -- they just stop (or, in one case, just fall off the roof). The solution to the problem with the neighbor is unintentionally unnerving.

His plans to halt the project are stopped by Sam, who recognizes him from his prostitution attempt and blackmails him. “I’m going to keep fighting to make sure we support military families in this year’s NDAA, including fixing unacceptable child care shortfalls and making sure our troops have the quality, affordable housing they deserve,” she said. He is a self-proclaimed drug addict who has been using since he was twelve years old. He smokes cigarettes and marijuana, takes prescription medications, and huffs chemicals. His self-destructive behavior is likely due to depression and strained familial relationships.

Must-Visit Los Angeles Design Shops

“I think in some respects, you could start to make the case that everyone here is now an interior designer.” Indeed, the city’s design scene has boomed, with new shops and showrooms sprouting up every month. What’s most exciting about this design renaissance, though, is the range of visions and styles represented around the city—due in part, perhaps, to the constant flow of new residents from around the country and world. Design scene is equally embracing of the primitive and the cutting-edge, the refined with the unrefined,” says Adam Blackman of Blackman Cruz, on Highland Avenue.

That Sam and Alyssa will become friends, and a little more. And that two unassigned characters of opposite genders are required by the laws of screenwriting to get together, even if one is a teenage pimp and the other a yuppie housewife. George's shack sits in a cul-de-sac high on a cliff overlooking the Pacific, in Orange County, Calif. Owners of ocean frontage in that area will be interested to learn that with 26 weeks of severance pay as a model-maker, George can afford to tear down his house and build another one. The White House has already proposed a 4.5% pay raise for all troops in 2025 as part of their federal budget request for fiscal 2025. That idea appears to have bipartisan support in both chambers.

George describes his father as a terrible drunk who one night drove while intoxicated and killed his mother and another woman, in addition to crippling a little girl in the back seat of the other car. George expresses guilt for not killing his father which may have prevented the accident. George confesses to Sam that he has been taking those pain medications for cancer, and he does not have much longer to live.

Sam appears to be rebellious which is evident by his attitude toward his family, school, and dress. He has blue hair, wears heavy dark eye makeup, and has a variety of piercings on his face. He smokes cigarettes in the school parking lot, despite only being 16 years of age. Sam also exhibits signs of depression such as social isolation, anhedonia, fatigue, and suicidal ideation. Sam even attempts prostitution most likely due to his self-loathing and feeling of worthlessness.

But there is a lot that is right with the movie, too, including subtle, magnetic performances and moments of real power and feeling. If the movie is not as dazzling as the finished house, at least it is not as decrepit as the shack. Since Taylor Swift released The Tortured Poets Department, fans have turned one line in her song “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me? Social media has been full of people quoting the line “You wouldn’t last an hour in the asylum where they raised me,” and now, Monica Lewinsky has joined in on the trend.

George passes away shortly after, but Sam and his family and friends finish building the house. George, with a time limit on his life, decides to demolish the shack left to him by his father and build his own custom house. He enlists his son, Sam, who is alienated from his stepfather Peter and his mother Robin, who has since been remarried to a wealthy investor. Sam is forced to spend his summer with George, who has not revealed his terminal condition, and help him with the house. Initially, Sam makes it a point not to help George demo the old house.

NEW YORK (AP) — Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has completed a book about her years in public life, from legislation she helped enact to such traumatizing moments as the Jan. 6 siege of the U.S. Capitol and the assault at her San Francisco home that left her husband with a fractured skull. "This is my only personal page," Asher said, noting that he will use it to discuss a broader range of topics including views on life, lessons he has learned and motivational-type topics like "energy in the gym." “There used to be a line about Los Angeles that everyone was either a screenwriter or an actor,” says Scotti Sitz, owner of L.A.

Robin (Kristin Scott Thomas), his ex-wife, now trapped in a loveless marriage with the absent-minded Peter (Jamey Sheridan). Sam (Hayden Christensen), George and Robin's angst-ridden, pierced, drug-using and self-loathing son. Coleen (Mary Steenburgen), the next-door neighbor, and her daughter Alyssa (Jena Malone).

Robin seeks comfort from George and then learns he has terminal cancer. George has not told anybody of his illness up to this point but decides to tell Sam as well. Sam did not handle the news of his father’s impending death well.

While George is tearing down his father’s old house, he explains the relationship he had with his father to Sam. George’s father was an abusive alcoholic who killed George’s mom in a drunk driving accident. Sam points out that George’s attempt to tear down the house is actually an attempt to tear down his father.

It gets distracting when some scenes in a movie exist on a different plane of possibility than the others.

George tells Sam, who feels betrayed and accuses George of being selfish and takes refuge at Alyssa's house. George collapses and is found by Robin the following morning. Complications arise when neighbor David Dokos tries to halt construction because the building's height exceeds the allowable limit by six inches.

It’s the seamless blend of tradition and the present, offering more than just a place to live but a haven of peace and beauty. One of the key architectural features of classic house plans is the symmetrical façade. This design element creates a sense of balance and harmony, and typically features a central entrance flanked by windows on either side. The windows may be arranged in a grid pattern and may feature shutters or other decorative elements.

Comprising two distinct masses, the home’s double-height living area delicately balances on the retaining wall, while a single-story bedroom wing interlocks, creating a striking L-shaped section. An office space in the Gatehouse is now a soothing spa-inspired lounge designed by Margaret Lalikian. The designer referenced the house’s original name, El Robles—Spanish for oak tree—with a tree-filled landscape mural by Arpy Dabbaghian.

“For the wall mural, I had to pick something to bring them into nature and a calming environment,” Lalikian says. The name translates as “cloth from Jouy,” referring to the small French town of Jouy-en-Josas where the factory that first produced the textile was located. The scenes typically feature idealized images of shepherds or farmers, sheep and other livestock, botanicals, and possibly even a humble barn. AntiquesThough Corrigan’s home is filled with antique furnishings, it’s really his collection of vintage accessories that transforms the space. Neoclassical-style columns, marble busts, porcelain urns—such smaller-scale objets lend an outsize sense of age and give patina to any interior.

LVT stands out as one of the most durable flooring options available, with its waterproof properties making it perfect for areas prone to moisture exposure like bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. Whether installed through a glue-down or click-lock system, LVT ensures a stable and long-lasting floor that can withstand heavy foot traffic. The theory that our homes reflect our societal progression stands true, shaping our living spaces for generations to come.

In addition to its resilience, laminate flooring comes in a variety of styles and price ranges, allowing for customization to suit different preferences and budgets. Maintenance is easy, requiring only simple sweep and mop routines to keep the floor looking its best. However, it's important to avoid excessive water exposure during cleaning to preserve the integrity of the flooring. Over time, engineered wood is prone to dents, scrapes, and wear, particularly in high-traffic areas or homes with pets. The top layer of engineered wood can't undergo refinishing as frequently as solid hardwood, potentially necessitating replacement sooner in heavily used spaces. As we delved into the differences between old and modern houses, we uncovered a fascinating truth – the evolution of architecture mirrors our changing lifestyles and values.

Whether you’re residing uptown, downtown, or somewhere in between, you can still create your timeless real estate piece that exudes the charm of New York. If you’re sold on the classic house design, you might be curious about what makes a house classic. It’s a good question, as certain essential elements can elevate an ordinary house to a timeless classic. To break it down further, a few key characteristics define a classic house design.

Modern Classic style, also known as Modern Traditional, is the perfect blend of modern + traditional… aka timeless! This style features the sleek, simple, contemporary lines of the modern design style paired with traditional furniture, finishes, and accessories to take what was "then" and make it "now". Fish Tank Ideas 30+ Inspiring Tanks

aquarium design ideas

A beautifully decorated aquarium full of glittering Rosy barbs, elegant Angelfish, and shoals of sparkling Neon tetras makes a stunning centerpiece in any home. These are usually dark in color and may even have objects printed on them to create the illusion of natural scenery. We live in the information age, and everyone has easy access to expert knowledge online. If you are uncertain if an object is safe, it is best to quarantine it in a separate body of water and watch what happens over time.

Natural Waterfall and River Aquascapes

Designing your aquarium is about more than just putting things in a tank. It’s about creating a balanced environment that’s interesting and healthy for your fish. You need to think about things like which fish will get along together, which plants will thrive, and how to arrange everything so it looks and works best.

Algae Eating Fish & Critters to Add to Freshwater Tank

All in all, it’s an expertly decorated tank that your fish will love. Perhaps getting the living plants will cost a bit more money, but it will be worth it when it ties together the overall style of the tank. Bamboo will easily stay in the water and hold up well over time—and add a wonderful feature to any interior design. If there were one of these at every bus stop, it would make the wait more enjoyable.

But first, measure everything with a ruler/tape to ensure the décor piece will fit in your tank. Also, take a moment to rinse the rocks before you place them into the aquarium. The thing is, they tend to be dusty, and that’s not what we want the fish to be exposed to. An underwater train station can be a lot of fun, and it can be a fun theme for small boys who love trains. Make sure to stick with plastic tracks and trains, since wooden tracks will likely erode and rot after they have been submerged long enough. It has the added benefit of offering a hiding and climbing option for your aquarium’s inhabitants, whether they be fish, crabs, snakes, lizards, or frogs.

This floating aquarium island looks way more complicated to achieve than it actually is, and it will have everyone wondering how you did it. You’ll need a handful of supplies, but this project shouldn’t take you too long to create. This stone terrace plan is a little more complex and does require some knowledge of working with cement.

Before buying a tank, research the correct tank size for your fish. These are great for giving your aquarium a dark brown tint, but they can cause problems because they’re known sometimes to cause gill damage in certain types of fish. For that reason, you should always thoroughly research any wood before adding it to your aquarium – if there’s a chance it could harm your fish, then don’t buy it. Just like choosing an appropriate substrate is essential for setting up a natural-looking environment, so too is choosing the best aquarium decoration. Aquariums can be a beautiful addition to any home, and they can also be a great source of entertainment for you and your family.

If you’re having a hard time placing the plants correctly, the scrapper tool will help with that. Oh, and don’t forget to install a water filter and heater to keep the fish cozy and warm, and the water fresh. With some creativity, you can show your own imagination even when it comes to your selection for a fish tank or aquarium. Rather than using a standard aquarium, why not consider a large mason jar. Some people have ever found incredibly clever ways to use old gumball machines as a fish tank, or old TV sets to create fish TV. You’ll only need a few simple items you likely already have around your house to create this planter.

DIY Artificial Grass With Stones and Driftwood by AQUAtisona

The thick, bare branches reaching out of the top of the tank against the pale, moonlit background is incredibly creepy! A few dark rocks and some gravel substrate completes this simple theme and pulls it together into a very impressive aquarium. With so many cool aquarium decoration ideas out there as to what would make the best tank, it might be hard to think of what will be best. That’s why we’ve provided you ten of the coolest fish tank decorating ideas to get your creative juices flowing and fish tank poppin’. Dive deep into history with this fish tank that transports you to an ancient sunken city.

I hope this article has given you some aquarium landscape ideas for your aquascaped tank! Another densely-planted natural tank, this one features a mix of wood and rock hardscaping with a large variety of plants growing on them. The sandy bottom is prominent in the front of the tank but the hardscaping hides the pockets of plant substrate in the back corners.

However, you can make a nano tank look much roomier than it really is by decorating it carefully. Dutch aquascaping uses little or no hardscaping and relies on the plants and substrate to create visual layers within your tank. It may take several months or even longer before your tank looks the way you want as you prune and shape your plant’s growth. To make your tank more interesting, create a theme or setting — for example, an underwater castle or Buddha shrine. With the walk perfectly aligned in the middle, with plants growing on either side of it, you get an artistic tank with a space of environmental greenery thrown in. The plants grow to the top of the tank couple with shorter plants close to the gravel provide a nice vertical contrast that’s sure to draw eyes and nods of approval.

Aim for a circle or horseshoe arrangement to mirror the real-life monument. This style is more about recreating a natural, comfortable habitat for the shrimp while creating an attractive, vibrant display. Remember, the art of aquascaping revolves around patience, creativity, and an ample amount of research. Make sure to verify that any products you’re working with are aquarium safe. Some paints, foams, and adhesives contain ingredients that can be deadly for your fish.
